5 Boat Storage Tips

As much as you love the water, you know you can’t be on your boat all the time. You need to bring it ashore every now and then. We’d love to help you with your boat storage needs at Sunshine Self Storage’s multiple Florida locations.

Before you store your boat, here are some tips to help keep your boat in top shape so it’s ready to go the next time you want to set sail.

Boat Storage - Miramar, Pensacola, Cooper City, Boca Raton

1. Clean Your Boat Inside and Out

To avoid tarnish, rust, and mildew, thoroughly wash all of the deck and hull. Try to remove as much of the slime, grime, barnacles and other gunk that builds up after time in the water. The interior should be cleaned as well, and it’s important to be sure the entire boat is completely dry before storing.

2. Fill it with Fuel

You may be tempted to drop your boat and run, but topping off the fuel tank will help you avoid corrosion. Condensation can form in the tank if its less than full. Also, consider pouring in a fuel additive to avoid carbon and sludge buildup.

3. Protect Your Engine and Battery

Another trick to reduce carbon buildup in the engine is to change the oil before storing. Equally important, you will want to flush the engine block with fresh water to remove any salt water residue to avoid rust and damage.

And to avoid ending up with a dead battery when you want to take your boat out for a fun day, disconnect your battery or connect it to a trickle charger while storing it.

4. Wax and Use a Good Cover

Next, give your boat a nice wax job. Wax not only looks nice, but it also puts a protective coat on it to help stop rust and corrosion. Then, place a protective cover on it that has been specifically designed to fit your boat. Investing in a custom cover will ensure there are no low areas to collect moisture but leaves enough room for air circulation.

5. Find a Storage Location

Where will you keep your boat? Consider whether you have the space and/or if your neighborhood association allows you to keep your boat at home. If this is not an option, you will want to do your research and find a trusted boat storage location.

Some important points to check on are indoor versus outdoor storage options, security features, and accessibility to your boat. Sunshine Self Storage Florida locations in Boca Raton, Cooper City, Pensacola, and Miramar all offer various boat storage options. Please call us today to find out more!
