When to Choose Climate Controlled Storage

There are many benefits to using climate controlled storage. First, let’s start with what climate controlled storage really means.

Climate controlled storage is a type of storage that maintains a constant temperature and humidity level controlled by the facility. This is important to ensure your stored items are not damaged by excessive heat, cold or humidity. Temperatures are usually kept between 55 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels around 55%. For comparison, an air-conditioned home is typically around 35-40% humidity.

Now that you know what climate controlled storage is, you need to determine if you need it or not. Generally speaking, it is your best choice for all storage. However, there are three main questions you can ask yourself when determining if it is a good choice for you or not.

1.How long will you be storing your items?

If you will be storing your items for less than three months, climate controlled storage may not be necessary. If your storage needs are for a year or more though, a temperature and humidity controlled storage unit would be best. When you are storing for longer periods of time you will be experiencing the highs and lows of all four seasons (hello, South Florida summers!) and exposing your items to potential damage.

2. What is the climate where you live?

Climate controlled storage should be a priority if you live in an area with extreme temperatures. For example, extreme heat in the southeast and high humidity in the southern states are used to seeing temperatures that typical items would not weather well in without temperature or climate control.

3. What are you storing?

Another thing to consider is what you are storing. Not everything needs climate controlled storage, but if you plan on storing antiques, art, electronics, musical instruments, wooden and leather furniture, photos, and other items made of natural materials, it is best for maintaining the integrity of your items.
